Tailgate
Tailgate refers to the board or gate at the back of a vehicle that is hinged at the bottom and can be removed for convenience sake in the case of loading or unloading. This is the opposite of a lift-gate or hatchback, when the door at the back of a vehicle is hinged at the top of the vehicle. In Britain it is normally referred to as the boot of a car, but is the same as a tailboard that is sometimes used as a synonym. Tailgate can also refer to an outdoor snack or beverage that is served for the back of a vehicle such as a pick-up truck at a sporting event.
Tailgate is also used as a verb for the action of following another vehicle at a very close distance. Related words include follow, keep close by, pursue, shadow, tag tail and trail.
The tailgate has given to rise to tailgate parties that are a social event held on and around the open tailgate of a vehicle. Activities include barbequing and often involve the use of alcoholic beverages. Tailgate parties are usually done in the parking lots of stadiums or sports arenas just before or after big sports events such as football or basketball play-offs.
